Buddenbrooks

The concept and models of “family” are constantly evolving. This transformational process is often seen as decay of the institution of family. I understand it as a positive progression. Thomas Mann’s classic “Buddenbrooks” (1901) is dealing with the transformation of a family and its themes are highly relevant today. I’ve been investigating family dynamics in a new edition of the novel and indulged in an expressive, pluralistic typographic approach that celebrates the diversity of family members—setting the literary masterpiece into a contemporary context. The eleven parts of the book are split into four volumes that each mark one generation of the Buddenbrook family.
