Dynamis Variable

Type Design
2021–24

The LGBTQIA* community is still stigmatized, criminalized, and discriminated against. In my BA thesis project, I understand type as a socially critical and political medium by referring to its significance as an omnipresent form of aesthetic expression of language—one of the key points of discrimination—and the historical development of type design. Turning away from the heteronormative notion of sexualities as part of a binary spectrum and instead turning towards an understanding of sexual diversity as a multidimensional space, I created a variable font with multiple axes (serif shape, boldness, slant) as a metaphor for human diversity, dynamics, and community.
